About

About Julie

Julie Root Sawyer is a kiln glass artist, educator, and creative facilitator whose work explores the intersection of light, color, texture, and the natural world. Working primarily with fused glass, she creates both sculptural and functional pieces that celebrate the expressive possibilities of glass while inviting moments of curiosity, reflection, and joy.

Julie brings more than three decades of experience as an art educator to her studio practice. After a career teaching visual art in public schools, she now teaches Art History and Art Appreciation at the university level, where she encourages students to see art as a powerful lens for understanding cultures, ideas, and human experience. Her background in education continues to shape her artistic philosophy: creativity flourishes through exploration, experimentation, and the freedom to embrace unexpected outcomes.

A dedicated advocate for the arts in her community, Julie serves as Workshop Coordinator for the Deerfield Valley Art Association's Fiddleheads Gallery, where she develops opportunities for artists and community members to learn, create, and connect. She is also the founder of Creative Flow Studio, an initiative offering process-based workshops that emphasize exploration, mindfulness, and creative risk-taking through media such as kiln glass, alcohol inks, watercolor, and mixed media.

Julie exhibits her kiln glass throughout western Massachusetts, where her work is recognized for its luminous color, layered compositions, and appreciation of the quiet beauty found in nature. Whether creating art in her studio or teaching others to discover their own creative voice, she believes that the artistic process has the power to inspire wonder, build community, and transform the way we see the world.
